Mobile crushing plant safety alert
Following a fatal accident involving a mobile crusher, HSE are asking all users of this type of plant to contact the supplier of their machine to check whether there is a risk of unintended movement of the track, through the electrical control system developing an earth/ground fault.
The machine involved in the accident, which occurred during maintenance work, was a BL Pegson 1000 Matrix cone crusher, manufactured in 2001, but the risk may be present on any machine with a similar control system. It seems that an electrical control cable had a damaged insulation sheath, allowing the conductor to come into contact with the metal framework of the machine. This caused a voltage change which sent a signal to the directional valve that in turn led to an unintended movement of the track. For full details go to HSE’s website: www.hse.gov.uk and look for the safety notices.

Bradley Group welcomes new Occupational Safety Consultants' Register
In response to Lord Young's report on health and safety, the Health and Safety Executive are working with professional bodies to set the standard of competence for safety consultants. Only those who have a degree level qualification and post-qualification experience will be able to join the Register, which has just opened for registration. The purpose of the Register is to reduce the chances of unqualified consultants giving poor advice to businesses, though use of a registered consultant will not be compulsory.
