Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare, makers of Dettol and other products, have been fined after an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that the filling machine shown above had not been isolated in order to be re-calibrated. The 25 year old worker doing the re-calibration suffered an open crush injury to his left forearm and tendon damage to his wrist and hand. The £200k fine was in addition to costs of £8261.
Neglecting to ensure that such a simple procedure is always in place clearly doesn’t pay. Criminal fines such as these are not covered by insurance. Some simple training – such as IOSH Managing Safely® – could save firms money in the long run but can also keep people safe while they’re at work.
